Like you, I initially had the same concern, but after checking with Pentax
Colorado, I obtained the 1.4X-S and have had no noticeable problems with it.
I can't tell the difference in image quality from this lens with or without
the convertor. I'm talking actual field results with the unaided eye or an
8X loupe. I haven't done any objective testing on this lens or this
combination. I do think the extra cost over a generic convertor is worth it,
of course this is totally subjective on my part. Hope this helps..
