I'm not Bruce, I I'll try to answer anyway :-)
Matte screens in AF cameras are 'fine grained" and those in manual bodies
are "grainy" - say like APX 25 vs HP5 in Rodinal :-) The graininess of the
screen in manual cameras makes focusing easier. I'm not sure how exactly,
but it does.
