The Canon D30 did quite well even though most prosumer cameras were up
to 5mp at the time. Anyone who looks at the resulting images knows
that 3mp from a D30 is much better than 5mp from a Sony DSC-F707 or
the like. The noise from the smaller prosumer sensors can't make up
for their increased resolution.

I expect that Pentax will have to release an 8mp followup to the *ist
D to complete with a new version of the 10D and D100 though (if those
also go to 8mp). I wouldn't be too surprised if they released
something like a *ist Dn which was basically the same camera with a
new sensor and a couple of other minor features.

I'll be ready to buy a backup *ist D body used when this happens if
people get upgrade fever.

This post is full of guesses, I have no idea what Pentax is really
doing. I haven't seen any announcements from Sony about an 8mp
APS-C sized sensor (they make the 6mp sensor used by the *ist D
and Nikon D100).
