Amita, A trick, and I am not sure where I learned it, is to stuff them with newspaper. It works wonders. It has saved me a couple of times during my work on archaeological digs in the tropics.

Prepare for rain, and be happy if you are spared. Gawd, yes! Have weatherproof footwear and a good windbreaker! I soaked my sneakers on a hike and they didn't dry out overnight, so I had to wear 2 layers of socks the next day. Darned uncomfortable. Forgot to mention, if you make it to the Orkneys, go to Hoy and hike to the Old Man of Hoy. It's a spectacular hike through hills full of nothing but scrub. When are you planning on going? There's a folk festival in the Orkneys in late May/early June. Might make for some great photo ops if you like that sort of thing. I got there after it was over but there were some musicians left jamming in a pub.
