Peter, I've been using Leicas for a few years, and my experience runs counter to your suggestions other than camera geeks fawning over the name. The best that's ever happened was that a woman with a hairy back that came to pull the crab grass from my lawn commented on how silly a fat old bald guy looked wearing Leica jewelry around his neck. Admittedly, I never had so much attention when carrying a Pentax.
