I was thinking an SLR, but this thing is a SIGNIFICANT improvement
over the first Leica/Panasonic digital thingie from what I can see.
I considered buying the first version, but the manual functions were
too hard to access and the AF was apparently weak.
It's still more like a "leica-ized" P&S than a "digitized" Leica to
my eye, but I suppose it'd be very hard to put digital guts in something
that looked and felt like the LX, at least with current technology.

1) I'm not a Leica guy, but what I've seen of the R-8 and R-9 are not
what I myself would call "old-fashioned look and feel".
If the back fit an R-4 or R-5, it'd be different.
2) I'll believe in the Leica digital back when it actually comes on
   the market.
