I'd also put in a vote for NPH: relaxed colour, lower contrast, nice skintones.
Shel, I think the problem you're going to bump up against is the
fundamental difference between how colour neg and black and white neg
work...owing to the way that the layers of colour dye are implemented
(and also to the very fact that there are layers), the "grain" of colour
neg is quite different from the grain of b&w, particularly in its edge
sharpness. Tri-X is going to have a texture and crispness possible that
just isn't an option in colour neg.
Colour neg is more like that T-grain stuff (T-Max, Ilford Delta).
By the way, my first roll of the reformulated Delta 400 is a real wow.
I'm gettin' sold on these Delta films pretty quickly! More details
later...once I make a big print.
