There is little excuse but apathy or ignorance for not including a real mirror lock in a camera which is full software configurable like the *ist D. I'd like the option of the mirror pre-fire (including a few other pre-fire timing options) plus a regular mirror lock option. The difference is that you have total control over timing when using a real mirror lock. I use the mirror pre- fire option when shooting scapes and other static subjects but for anything dynamic its often no less than frustrating. I've said it before but what I'd really like to see is a similar system to that provided on the late Leica R bodies. The way these work is that when in mirror lock mode the fist shutter press pre-fires the mirror and the second shoots, the mirror then reverts to open until the next shutter depression. This system allows the shooter to determine the pre-fire and absolute exposure time. IOW you can shoot 1/4 second after mirror lock or leave it for minutes until tripping the shutter. Total flexibility.
