I suspect so. I was just checking the pdf of the latest *ist D brochure to see if the new "backwards compatibility" rates a mention, doesn't seem so. However in the 4 page brochure it does state quite clearly in a large table that the camera can miraculously squeeze many more large images than small per KB of storage space. Makes me wonder.
