My sources in the photo retail business say that medium format sales are just about dead. I observed some time ago that many professionals who use/used medium format didn't do so for the increased resolution necessary for large prints, they did it to be able to make moderate sized prints (8 x 10 or 11 x 14) with ISO 800 or 1600 film without grain becoming objectionable (as it does with 35mm film). For this application 6MP digital works just as well - for less money and greater convenience. Of course there are some applications for which the bigger neg and superior resolution of medium format really are indispensable, but this is a relatively small segment of the market (which is dominated by wedding shooters in terms of sheer numbers), and most of these guys already own MF cameras :) I'd also note that medium format cameras are generally built to pro standards and are very durable, so they last longer and are readily available in good condition on the second-hand market. The market for MF is tiny these days. -- Mark Roberts Photography and writing www.robertstech.com
