I think that any flash system that prefires is going to create the type of problem you are having with your subjects. I am finding the istD works just swell on ISO 400 with a normal analogue TTL flash, and I expect it would also work well with a good quality automatic flash that bypassed the fancy in camera circuitry altogether.
