Hello Simon, I get 8X12's printed quite commonly. You have to go a lab that will do it - my local Sams Club will not print them. The lab I normally use will print them.
As for frames/mats, 8X12 is not common but does exist. The family may not have ever looked in a full service lab or frame store. Again, the local Walmart/Sam's Club type place doesn't deal with 8X12 but bigger stores do.
