I have never had a "real" scone, but what they sell as a scone here in the US (usually in upscale coffee shops) is a sweet buscuit (shortcake) with fruit in it.

* Quite the opposite of the Ugly American Traveller - who I have met on
a number of occasions. OTOH The US navy guys have always been polite to
me, but then again they had automatic weapons and BFO weapons with them.
Unfortunately we Australians have a pretty well earned reputation for
being appalling travellers.
