Hey, melted butter and peanut butter on toast was one of my favorites as a kid. If the butter did not run down my chin I figured I didn't have enough butter on it.

Ok, so it finally all makes sense! I could never work out the whole "peanut
butter and jelly" sandwich thing, cause to me, margarine/butter, peanut
butter and jam (jelly) is just gross! My 4yo loves it on his toast, but with
melted butter/marg, it ends up a big mess! So, now I "get it" - no
butter/marg! lol. It is still gross, but it makes more sense.

Just to re-confuse you -- no way I'm making a PB sandwich (with or without jelly) without margarine on the bread first. The marg is necessary to stop the PB from sticking to the roof of the mouth, slowing the eating and possibly causing gagging.
OTOH, yes, that combination on hot toast would make a big mess, but on room temperature or slightly warm bread, it works without making a big mess ...
.. until, of course, the kid, in true kid fashion, opens up the bread to get at the filling ... But made with just a thin layer of jam and eaten in the adult manner, it's not at all
messy.
