Oh, that sounds very ugly, I've seen it before and I don't believe that there 
is any easy remedy as such. Have you tried copying the card using another 
reader? Can you zoom in on the images in camera? Are your transfers reliable? I 
have seen many problems with USB due to inferior extension cables. You really 
need to determine where the problem lies so it doesn't occur again.

I have taken to transferring my digital images to portable hard drive 
periodically whilst in the field so as to avoid the types of problem that you 
described. Good luck and please keep us updated as to your discoveries.
