Just because a 52x burn verifies OK does not mean the data has been recorded as well as a 4x burn for example. When you do the verify you have no clue as to the "margin" of the data read. It is good for checking grossly bad media but not so good for testing integrity or longevity of the burn quality.
I suspect part of the legend has be spurned by the bizzare ramblings of a few audiophiles who swear that they can hear the difference between a 1x mastered CD and disc written at faster than play speed. You aren't in this league are you?
