Shel,
Here is web site that may help you : http://personal.inet.fi/private/luukkanen/3170_review.html
This fella likes it, and gives a number of examples of scans he's made, and is happy with it.
Good site, and I'm keeping i for a later review when I can absorb all he's done and experienced with it.

"This model is completely incompatable with Mac OS X Panther 10.3.2 AND also with Mac OS 9.2.2."
That was the balancing opinion from a user. He couldn't seem to get it properly installed, using OS 9.2.2, nor Panther.
He has NOT yet contacted Epson to see what they say about it, only grouses that it's a worthless scanner.
He can't find an email address, only snail-mail, so he stops there and gives up. Rotten company.
On the other hand, the first user said it's a wonderful scanner, and it does everything to perfection. He's very well pleased. 5 out of 5.
Well, you must say the pcmag site is well-balancd in it's choice of user's letters.
One of each...

I was just about to write a check for an Epson
3170 when I though it best
to check with the scanning sophisticates on the list and get some current opinions on flatbed scanners. I'm mostly interested in getting high quality scans of old family photos, and, until I get a dedicated film scanner, some quick scans for proofing purposes for 35mm and med format negs. The Epson is comfortably within my price range for this item ($200.00 +/-) What other scanners should I consider?
