Hi Joe, I know pretty sure that the new 28-70 2.8 isn't of extending
barrel design. The barrel is fixed and you can still attach a filter
to the front making the glass move only beyond the filter, with no
extending parts elsewhere. But it indeed is less well built than the
older 28-70 2.6-2.8, with more plastic on the zoom ring (which you can
feel is not as smooth) etc.
