And, without my having to read The Last of The Plantagenets, how did a French king/duke/whatever, become a monarch in England? I know it's a bit convoluted, but in a few sentences...?

It is old French for hawthorn. It is the name of the family who became the monarchs of England after the Normans. Matilda, the daughter of William the Conqueror, married Geoffrey Plantagenet who was the king or duke or whatever of Anjou.
