You're right, Tom,
In fact, Point Pelee is the southernmost point of Canada (as well as Ontario). It's farther south than over 50% of the continental US landmass.

A look at a map will tell the tail. Point Pelee is the southern most point in Ontario and there is a change of islands in Lake Erie leading toward it from the US side. However the birds have to fly across several miles of open water before they reach the point. It acts as a giant funnel for the birds.
