Dave,

One big issue will be that she can't shoot any faster than flash synch
on the K1000 - I'm guessing 1/60.  So basically if she meters for the
scene, keeping in mind max shutter speed, then set the flash to 2X the
ISO she is actually using (assuming she has an Auto sensor on the
flash) and has the f stop on the camera in about the same range as the
flash auto setting, she should be covered.

Your idea may also work if the flash isn't very powerful.  Basically
set it on manual so it fires full power and then diffuse it to suit.
Any way for her to do some test shots?
