The problem is that a good SLR system is - economically - 90% lenses and 10% bodies. That's what por will buy. But most people will maximum buy 50/50. That's why pro camera manufacturers can sell expensive bodies. Small companies have to make relativly expensive bodies to compete - and then try to reduce lens costs. That probably why Pentax does not have IS and have started to make lenses without aperture rings. Jens

I very much doubt that lens sales enters into the decision-making procedure; the fact that there may be some new lens sales is no more than a bonus. The primary decison is "if we put a mechanical aperture coupler in the body, will we be able to make enough extra income to make up for the additional cost in research, engineering, testing & manufacture?". I doubt it - while there are one or two die-hards who won't buy a camera that only works with lenses made in the last 20 years, there are probably more people who are price- driven, and would be deterred by the extra cost (note that we're talking about the *ist film camera; a price-sensitive product). > Or it might be true that all new Pentax lenses would have no aperture ring > so that they could produce IS/USM in the near future. > > Regards, > Alan Chan > http://www.pbase.com/wlachan > > >Actually I think leaving out compatibility was a marketing decision, (the > >engineers probably had the mount > >designed with a aperture simulator lever), the marketeers said, if they > >can't use old lenses they'll have to buy > >new ones.
