Just to be a devil's advocate...

I think it's stupid but no more than any other "Official this or that". M&M's the offical candy of the WInter Olympics. I could have that slightly wrong but the same for Coca-Cola, Subaru, you name it.

Pentax's is probably a little better than most. Some people will think that implies using a Pentax digital camera is a better way than others to put their photos on the Internet. Which I'm sure is what Pentax hopes they will think.

I can't think of one that was even memorable enough to dislike. The new US slogan "Pentax, the official digital camera of the internet", is so pretentious.

So what?
Is that a bad Anglo-Saxon word?
If they have so been declared by others, it's a fait accompli. Nothing to be ashamed about.
"Pride" is nothing to be ashamed about.
I remember my old father-in-law thought poorly of anyone who displayed pride, justified or not.
Ahhh well...

I share Peters view. The point is that there is no internet related standard organization document declaring "Pentax, the official digital camera of the internet". This is purely pretentious marketing bunk and means absolutely nothing, in fact it makes their marketing department look like fools to many.

Okay. Gotcha. I had no way to know.
For all I knew, someone in the industry threw that 'title' at them.
Happens all the time. Different strokes for different folks. Breakfast cereals, etc...
No problem. I like Pentax, so it didn't bother me...

See: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/inet-standards.html

Just google "official digital camera of the internet" and see how much negativity towards the brand it has generated within the Internet community,

For example:

"I am the official boycotter of all Pentax products. THe nerve of that firm to insult the intelligence of those accessing the Web!!!! Research indicates that the average Web user has above average intelligence. To insult us with tht lame idiotic statement leaves but one response...... to never ever buy a Pentax product again. Ever.

I'm sure they'll care...
Nevertheless, I'm also sure someone at Pentax is and will be watching this.
And talking to their ad agency with some seriousness, I would hope...

the only site that you will see with a positive spin on it is, you guessed, Pentax.

Ha, ha ha... Okay, you've made your point. I stand corrected! Sorry Peter. No hard feelings, okay?
