Use to got there quite often, but I haven't been there for a couple of
years. Its one of my favorite places. It's a great place for backpacking or
just soaking in the great up north feeling.
Isle Royale is the least visited National Park in the system. Boat service
is available from either Grand Portage, Minnesota (closer), Houghton or
Copper Harbor, Michigan. Seaplane service is available from Houghton/Hancock
Michigan. After driving 12 hours, I usually splurge and take the seaplane.

Isle Royale is a backpacker's dream. The trails are from easy to moderate
with camping areas (primitive) throughout. The island is roughly 45+ miles
long and 9+ miles at the widest. About 850 square miles in total. There are
no roads on Isle Royale. There are park facilities at both ends of the
island - Rock Harbor & Windigo. At Rock Harbor there is a lodge and
restaurant. Efficiency units are also available along with a primitive camp
areas. You generally need reservations for the lodge or efficiency unit.
There are also water taxis that operate out of Rock Harbor that can drop you
off and pick you up.
Animals seen on Isle Royale include Moose (common), wolf (uncommon), beaver,
fox, loon, eagles and a variety of water fowl.

The best times to visit IMHO, are in late spring/early summer (May/June) and
late summer (late August/mid September).

Stay away from July/early August due to black flies.
