Indeed - Tamron and Sigma were better wide open in term of sharpness than Pentax. But from about f5.6 Pentax was equal + it had better contrast. That's what I remeber from Color Foto test. I'd add to this very good Pentax build quality (lots of metal) and nice limiter switch with MF position. As soon as you switch it to MF, you can do manual focussing without need of doing the same on body, just like in FA* lenses.
