Pentax has always been more about very good lenses attached to middle of the raod performance bodies. I don't know how the present lens lines up qualitywise to the competition at the moment, but the three new lenses I have bought recently are all excellent performers. Even the 18-35 I bought with the istD was a decent little lens, for what it was. The istD, for all it's failings is still a pretty competent little camera, and it has a nicer build than it's competition. William Robb
