Most of Canons current offerings are more expensive than an amateur needs, and more expensive than 90% of all professionals need. What about not having bottomless pockets don't you understand.

Canon has the advantage of IS/USM where as Pentax has unmatched backward
compatibility. If you don't have bottomless pockets the latter should mean more to the advanced amateur
than IS/USM which most people buying in this segment probably can't afford. Unless you need IS/USM
the logical choice should be Pentax. The problem is that most people aren't particularly rational, (and Pentax
hasn't the wit to market and advertise it's advantages).
Other than IS/USM, Canon have a larger and better selection of zoom lenses to choose from. And there is Nikon too. I'd say it is rational to choose Canon, then Nikon. What about Pentax? Their consumer tele-zooms are lacking, and the 2.8 zoom is too expensive for what it is. Pentax still has its charm, but that's not significant enough to compete with the others.
