I think you've hit the nail on the head with regard to the advertising
slogan.

Probably a sneaky way of inserting more advertising into the telecast.
Wasn't Canon buying advertising a while back with a famous tennis player
talking about how good the Canon autofocus was? I wouldn't be surprised
if
the whole thing was pre-arranged. Canon probably supplied the camera and
plenty of $$$ to the tv network to aim the cameras at Mr. Williams.
I think the slogan Pentax uses internally is:
"Pentax: so good we don't need to advertise"
