When I went to USA this spring, I had a Sachtler tripod with a Foba Superball head as a carry-on. THey didn't object at Oslo Airport. They *did* object at check-in at Newark, though. So I sent it as registered luggage without any further protection. No harm done, but I won't take that chance again.
