I think that would be a very smart move for them if they could make it happen. Perhaps keeping as much of the 10D chassis as possible and leaving out all the high-speed technology of the 1D2 might get them there. Remembering that the Nikon D100 and Canon D60 were about $2200 or so when first introduced, I'd say that a price under $2500 would make an 8MP, 1.3x-crop 10D replacement very successful. Heck, the D30 was successful at around $3000, so I'd say even that price point would make a stripped-down 8MP, 1.3x DSLR a winner. It would cement Canon's dominance in the digital arena my drawing a clear division between "amateur" DSLR's (6MP, 1.5 crop) and professional DSLR's (1.3x or full-frame and 8MP or more). Perhaps this would be largely psychological, based as much on marketing as actual requirements of working photographers, but we all know that kind of thing has a major driving effect on the market. (Just browse the rec.photo.digital newsgroup for a couple of days to see it in all its nauseating detail.) My guess is that making a sub-$3000 8MP, 1.3x DSLR is what Canon *wants* to do. Let's see if they can pull it off. Or when. -- Mark Roberts Photography and writing www.robertstech.com
