This is quite true.  Both the M* and the A* 300/4's (mechanically and
optically the same) have a fairly long "throw" to the focus ring,
and the motion is relatively stiff (except in well-used specimens,
where it becomes a bit easier to turn).

And, in fact (or at least in my experience and for my tastes), the
F* 300/4.5, in manual mode, is actually a quicker lens to focus
manually.  Not only is the focus motion less stiff, but (I think)
the motion is quicker (i.e., it has a shorter "throw").

[I actually burned some film using this lens, focusing manually (on
an LX), with and without the T6-2X TC, at a Red Sox game on
Thursday, and I chose it - it's actually my wife's lens, used in AF
mode with her ZX-5n - for the purpose in preference to my A* 300/4.]
