While I agree that the F* has a much closer close focus, for a better reproduction ratio, the M*/A*
F4.0 are much more compact.

Get yourself a set of extension tubes. They will get you closer.



Yes indeed, as Bob has suggested. I've used the shortest tube of the Pentax Extension Tube Set K on an A* 300/4, simply to get the close focus point closer (for a shot of a squirrel sunning itself on the back porch railing too close for the lens to focus on alone).

(This reminds me of another advantage of the F* 300/4.5 over the A*
300/4 - I think its close focus point is about half as close.)
