i have never seen my *istD do this under similar conditions. also, if it is a critical exposure, i check the histogram and bracket 1 or 1.5 stops for later blending. i always shoot evaluative mode for these types of scenes. the only other mode i use is spot metering and that is only when i am shooting birds against the sky.
