So > where is the shortage? That's srtange to me. B&H and Adorama are among the biggest Pentax sellers in the USA. So I don't believe they ordered to little of them especially after first shortage that occured... There are no problems with availability of digital dedicated lenses like Nikon DX 18-70 (and D70 sells in much higher numbers than *istD). So where is the real problem?
