With

P-TTL

Thanks for the answers Sylwester. I tried M mode with green button but I
now realise that it is only useful for available light or low speed sync
flash photos. Although I agree that the camera won't know what aperture is
set when off 'A' - it will close down to that aperture to take a photo and
with TTL flash it should expose correctly at any shutter speed below 1/150.
In fact the *istD manual states that with lens used in the "off A" position
TTL flash is available. I tried it again and now the photos come out
exposed correctly (maybe there was a dirty contact on the flash or something
when I tried before). I also did some more experimentation and found:

1) With the F-lens off 'A' and the camera set to 'P':
The AF360 display shows P-TTL but as there is no 'double flash' I guess it
is in ordinary TTL mode (why does the flash display continue to insist that
it is in P-TTL mode when it is not?). No matter what aperture I set on the
lens the 'info' on the *istD preview screen later claims it was at f4.5 (I
don't know how it comes to that conclusion?); and the camera sets the
shutter speed to 1/100.

2) With the F-lens off 'A' and the camera set to 'M' (manual):
The AF360 display still shows P-TTL but again as there is no 'double flash'
I guess it is in ordinary TTL mode. I can set any speed up to 1/150 and the
'info' on the *istD preview screen gives f--- (not a swear word I hope).

3) With an M-lens (but with lens information contacts for matrix metering
contacts fitted) and the camera set to 'P':
The AF360 display again shows P-TTL despite the fact that as there is no
'double flash' once again I guess it is in ordinary TTL mode. No matter
what aperture I set on the lens the 'info' on the *istD preview screen later
claims it was at f2.0 (again, very strange that the camera should come to
this conclusion); and the camera sets the shutter speed to 1/150 (note that
this is different to the speed set for the F-lens).

4) With an M-lens (but with lens information contacts for matrix metering
contacts fitted) and the camera set to 'M' (manual):
As for (2).

Is there anyone who can shed some further light on this flash/camera/lens
interaction?
