I have a multi-card reader with USB port which physically fits in the same space as a 3.5" floppy drive, it is connected internally via USB2 and it behaves much the same as yours I suspect. It's a great little device and very inexpensive, but unlike the rest of my system unit and integrated peripherals it is gray.
