Ah, tricky. I suppose the thing to do when renewing the laptop is to ensure 6 pins on the Firewire. I find the power out on the Firewire to be very useful - I have a small LaCie Pocket Drive ext hard drive for backups and you just plug it in and off it goes. Powerbooks and iBooks have the powered Firewire and automatic recognition in the OS so Mac users may like to consider the Lexar units.
