He seemed to have the gift of making friends with everyone! There's a portrait of him in one of Ansel Adams books (is it 'Making of 50 Photographs'?) and several of his scrapbooks show him playing host to other notable photographers (I remember David Bailey was one). I do think Avedon was a close friend and mentor in the USA though. I went to the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London last month (did anyone else?) and some of the images were outstanding. His great legacy seemed to be the sheer volume of work. It seems from 1902 to 1986 there was rarely a day he wasn't taking (brilliant) pictures of life around him. Chris
