I do from time to time. Of course I use one as a flash meter in the studio. And ocationally I use one outside the studio too - that's when light/subjects are difficult, incident metering will produce better results. Go photograph a black door and a white door (two seperate shots) using the AE-functions of your built-in meter (reflected light metering), without any corrections. Both images will come out in THE SAME GREY (18%) tone. That's how a meter works. (Sorry to bother some of you, "old" experienced photographers with this well known tutorial from the early days of learning the craft).
It's not that the hand held meter is better. It isn't. It's just that incident metering is indifferent to the properties of the subject - because only the light that's hitting the subject, is measured. Not the reflected light. I use a Gossen Lunasix F. I used a Sekonic L-398 Studio Deluxe meter (which has been mentioned quite a bit here) exclusively for many years. I bought it used in Pensacola, Florida over 17 years ago. I wanted to work on my flash photography and also get better readings at the occasional weddings I did, so I got a Sekonic L-358 two years ago. The old L-398 still makes it out, but the L-358 seems to always be in the bag. I like the dual ISO setting on it. Always the cautious one I picked up a used Minolta Flash Meter III and use it the least of the three. I use the meter quite often, especially on days of harsh sunlight. As a matter of fact I used it exclusively with my *ist D and 645n while at the Hoover Dam a couple of weeks ago. I do compare measurements with the cameras. The external meters have never betrayed me. I enjoy using the incidence setting. When I shoot finish line photos with my MZ-S and ZX-5 I also use an external meter exclusively - especially since I am not using a flash and the finish line is in shadows. People have commented on the photos, some even rave over them! I like the digital ones due to the more accurate readings in low light than with my L-398. So, though most of my shots are taken ddigitally now, I still use an external meter quite often...
