And now a question that will reveal my status as a complete novice:

What exactly do the different letters in the Pentax lens designations
mean? I've been looking for an explanation on the K mount info page and
other places, but not found anything...

I understand the difference between an "M" and "A" lens, of course, and
I know an "FA" lens has autofocus. But how about "F"? Or "K"? And are
there others?

"F" was an early foray into autofocus. Surprised you didn't see this on the K mount page as I'm sure it's there. I'm not sure on "K" but always assumed it is either just specifying the physical mount rather than any information connectors. There is also "FAJ" which is "FA" without an aperture ring.

Small correction 'F' was the first series of successful autofocus lenses. Some of the best though of Pentax lenses are 'F' lenses. "AF" was the early foray into autofocus. Only one exists the AF 35-70 f2.8. Which in concept is a whole lot better than in practice.
