I'm sorry to hear of your problem and I'm not going to add to the chorus of 
suggestions regarding recovery (as I've tried many and had lots of 
unpredictable outcomes). But what I will suggest in future is a quick solution 
to help prevent future occurrences (easy to say in retrospect I know)

I write all my data to DVD media however I only write single session discs so 
to optimise the space on the media I need to accumulate 4.7GB of data before I 
burn. What I do in the interim is keep a copy of all un-burnt data on a 
separate drive (actually a different machine) and I don't delete it until my 
back-up has successfully verified and I've successfully "thumbnailed" the disc. 

Just get yourself a small drive (it need only be the capacity of your back-up 
media of course) to dedicate to the task and hopefully you'll avoid such 
catastrophic data loss in the future.
