My biggest problem with the lens though was the weight - it weighs
almost as much as my pz-1p.

Balances pretty well on MZ-3 with battery pack FG, never been lucky enough to own a Z-1p.

It may balance, but that doesn't stop it weighing as much as a bus :)

I replaced it with an FA28-10/4AL. Which weighs nothing, has no
gubbins that suck the power out of my batteries at an obscene speed,
is lots shorter (but doesn't zoom as far...which is annoying) and
was cheaper.

Build quality is dreadful, but yes it's light and handy, I don't worry about batteries with the battery pack fitted, then again I don't use power zoom that much either!

The build quality feels about the same on the 2 to me. My 28-105 is a bit creaky, and doesn't feel that solid. If it was just mine, then I agree that it could be a bit better, but the main feeling behind that is its weight and solidity that comes with that weight.

I still think i'll try and see what's wrong with my 28-105
though...i like heavy things with lots of buttons on which don't
really do much :)

Worth carrying the extra weight for the build quality and extra range?!

I don't think it will ever really be carried around any more - it's just really too heavy for my kit. I mainly shoot the 28-70 at pretty much 50mm anyway, and only don;t use my M50/1.7 as my pz1p walkaround lens because of the lack of AF and the little bit of zoom that I do use. However i just picked up a FA50/1.7 off ebay, so that may change.

I'm thinking of getting a *istDs though, and a 28-105 could be a nice lens for me to use on that (with the extra length giving me an even bigger magnification on the digi) and it did take some nice pictures in the short time i was using it...
