This is a link to the spec sheet for the sensor in the *ist D http://www.framos.de/pdf_sheets/ICX413AQ.pdf It can be used in electronic or mechanical shutter modes however it only provides frame readout at a relatively slow 1/3.08s per frame. The *ist D would offer far poorer performance and provide no dark frame NR if it had no mechanical shutter.
