I wasn't hiking though: the lake shore is only a few seconds walk from the road.
I do remember carrying that ^%$($* behemoth up to the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall, then leaving it to one side as there was too much spray. I had a hard enough time keeping the 35mm kit from getting completely soaked. That was a character-building exercise :)
Either way I loved that rotating back. It's a great feature for a landscape camera. If you've ever tilted the tripod head with a Pentax 67 attached, you'll understand.
