Hi, William,
Thanks for the kind words about "Moss Corner".
The grid that you mention was a chain-link fence. I guess I could have cropped
it (or most of it) out, but I didn't want to do it for that print, for a couple
of reasons.
Firstly, I don't like to crop, unless absolutely necessary.
Secondly, I would have then had to crop the top of the frame as well, or the car
would have been too low in the frame. I think that the background is essential
to the print, as it gives the feeling of motion, and I wouldn't want to crop
that out.
Thirdly, as you can see from the borders around the shot, it was taken,
uncropped from the original print. I was rather proud that I was able to capture
that shot as is (car centred and all), and to me, cropping it would have taken
that satisfaction from me. When I used to go to races, I'd normally take 10 or
20 rolls of film, and I'd be happy if one out of 5 shots turned out. No
autofocus/exposure in those days. It was all pre-focus to the track, or pan,
and hope to capture the cars where you want to - of course, I still use a
Spotmatic, so that hasn't changed for me.
And as for colour, well, I've always preferred b&w - still do - but you're
right. Anyone who remembers those Tyrrell cars knows that they were a lovely
shade of blue, and it would have looked beautiful against the grassy backgound!
Of course, back then, it cost about twice as much to develop and print colour as
b&w, about the opposite of today, and that was a significant part of my
decision-making process at the time!
Thanks again!
regards,
frank
