The second version of the Tamron (AF Aspherical LD) is surprisingly good, I
bought one cheaply from eBay just to see what kind of lens is it. Passable
for snapshots when traveling - and for internet, of course.
The 3rd version is more compact but optically not as good, according to
tests.
