Fuel economy in a RACE car? Not even a blip on the chart. A meaningless goal.
Keith, this is a VERY outdated statement. MOST races are won these days in large part due the car's ability to burn just a bit less fuel than it's competitors. (Drag racing, of course, is an exception) It's not uncommon to see the winning car being pushed into the winner's circle because it's out of gas.
At Le Mans, one extra lap per tank will win you the race almost every time.
Of course, cb.
Thats sort of out of context.
"Fuel economy" as it regards auto racing and as it affects the transportation or petrochemical industry are worlds apart.
The originator of the comment was reflecting (or parroting) liberal concerns about how we in the U.S. waste most of our resources, like gasoline, and your discussion of how a race team needs to fine tune its vehicle to conserve the last ounce...well, they're two different things entirely! <g>
That's odd. I thought I was suggesting that shoving more and more fuel through a pump was a very wasteful and inefficient way of creating more power and that, in our modern age, someone would have come up with a better system if the regulations governing the events weren't so stodgy and restrictive.
