I'm more curious about the black and white objects side-by-side in the center, which
is primarily dark.
Could you try doing this in manual exposure mode with a manual flash and proving that
it's incapable of a good exposure at certain f/lengths?
I'd more suspect the matrix metering system. (Computers can do only so much.)
