I queried Pentax about this but they aren't responding. Perhaps that's better than when they reply "We don't know anything, but ask anytime."
I'm thinking of getting my wife an Optio for Christmas -- maybe the S40. This and other models include a smidgen of built-in storage -- 11 mb, I believe. Here's my question:
If one puts in an SD card, does the camera save files to both the built-in memory and the card? Or can it be made to save only to the card?
She will probably take the SD card to Walmart and have prints made. If images are in the built-in memory, though, then the whole camera would have to be left with Walmart. Not good.
Also, any idea about how many images can go on an SD card of 128 or 256 mb at highest resolution?
Thanks,
Joe
With the card in, it writes only to the card. With the card out, it writes to the onboard memory. An icon on the LCD screen shows what it is writing to. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch between card and onboard memory when there is a card in. I think the onboard is only for testing - really, you'll need a memory card. Get one, they are pretty cheap these days.
I have the S5i, and it writes about 74 jpgs at the highest res and lowest compression on a 256 card.
BTW, on the rattling sound my Optio makes when focusing, I went into a camera shop to pick up a nice little softcase for my optio, and asked the nice salesman if I could compare mine with one on their shelf. Theirs made the same sound, so I guess it is normal.
