Speed is only an issue if the media/ROM combination can't produce error free discs. As a suggestion verify any data written to disc and try to write any discs that you intend to store as archives in a single session. If discs contain errors the verification process should pick it up but if you aren't verifying discs then any errors in image files will generally be quite visually apparent that is if your application manages to actually open them.
